Márton Nagy: the range of products subject to margin stop may be expanded
If prices start to rise for other products not currently subject to the profit margin cap, then “we will expand the range of products covered by the profit margin cap” – said Minister for National Economy Márton Nagy in a video posted on social media on Wednesday.
Responding to a question about how the price reductions have affected certain food items and how much families can save, the minister said that the average price drop for the 1,000 products was 17.7%, with prices decreasing for 874 of them.
There have been significant price drops, such as pork lard falling by nearly 31%. Sour cream with 12% fat content dropped by 27%.
He cited examples including margarine with a 25% drop, strudel flour with 22%, and plain flour with a 20.6% decrease.
When asked about what to expect next and whether the trend could continue, he said the major reduction has already occurred, as the profit margin cap takes effect immediately after being announced. Most shops adjusted their prices by March 17.
He added that they are monitoring whether these low prices are being maintained, and whether price increases appear in other products not yet subject to the cap.
“If they do, we will expand the range of products covered by the profit margin cap.”
– he declared.
